Ignitors for Gas Furnaces Introduction

Ignitors are an essential component of gas furnaces. They are responsible for lighting the gas burners, which heat the air that is distributed throughout a home or building. There are two types of ignitors commonly used in gas furnaces: hot surface ignitors and intermittent pilot ignitors.

Hot surface ignitors are made of silicon nitride or silicon carbide and work by heating up an element to a high temperature. When the gas valve opens, the hot surface ignitor ignites the burner flame. These ignitors are often more reliable and durable than intermittent pilot ignitors.

Intermittent pilot ignitors are smaller and less expensive than hot surface ignitors. They use a high voltage electrical spark to ignite the gas burner. These ignitors are often used in newer, high-efficiency furnaces.

Regardless of the type of ignitor used, it is important to have them inspected and replaced as necessary to ensure the safe and efficient operation of a gas furnace.
